Therapy for expats and internationals
Moving to another country changes more than your address. The life you built, the people who knew you, the language you think in: much of it stays behind, and something new has to grow in its place.
Many of the people I work with are expats or internationals. I work in both English and Dutch, with people from diverse cultures and backgrounds. Having been raised in an international environment, I thoroughly enjoy working with expats.
What brings people in
Sometimes it is a feeling that is hard to name: a loneliness that persists even when life looks full, or the sense of no longer quite knowing who you are now that the old context has fallen away. Sometimes it is a relationship under pressure. A move asks a lot of a couple, especially when one partner followed the other, or when two people grew up with different languages and different ideas of what love and family look like.
And sometimes the move is not the issue at all. Old patterns, an earlier loss or the effects of trauma simply travel with you, and a new country can bring them to the surface.
How I work
I work with individuals and with couples. My approach is psychodynamic and client-centred. I draw from several traditions, among them Emotionally Focused Therapy, psychoanalysis and body-oriented work, and adjust to what serves you. We look not only at what brought you in, but at what lies underneath.
Sessions are in English or Dutch, whichever lets you speak most freely.
